If you have experienced this, you know how frustrating it can be. Your chain can fall off your rear cog and front chainring at any time for any reason. Therefore you should know how to put a chain on your beach cruiser quickly and efficiently.

How Do You Fix A Bike Chain That Fell Off?

Here are the step-by-step instructions to fix a slipped bike chain in more detail. This is very easy to do and will take no more than 5 minutes to complete.

Step 1 – Flip Your Bike

Dismount your bike and flip it upside down so it is resting on the handlebars and saddle. This position will make your bike stable and provide easy access to fix your chain.

Step 2 – Attach to Rear Cog

The first point of reattaching your chain is the rear cog. Line up the chain around the rear axle and then pull the chain tight.

Step 3 – Loop Around Front Gear

Loop the chain around the front chainring by placing the chain links on the top teeth.

Step 4 – Slowly Start Pedaling

Slowly pedal forward guiding the chain with your fingers around the entire front gear. As you pedal, the chain will align itself correctly with both gears.

Prevent Your Bike Chain From Falling Off

It’s annoying when your chain falls off. This post explained how to reattach your bike chain but wouldn’t it be great if you could prevent this problem from happening?

Here is what you can do to stop your bike chain from falling off. Watch the video and follow the simple steps below one at a time to learn how to tighten the chain on your beach cruiser.

Here are the steps mentioned in the bike written out to help you follow along:

  1. Start by loosening the bolts on the rear wheel
  2. Pull the rear wheel back until you see the chain tighten between the rear cog and front chainring. It does not need to be super tight but you also do not want excessive slack. You want to make sure it is a happy medium.  If it is too tight, it won’t perform as effectively and will place a lot of stress on your chain.
  3. Align your rear wheel perfectly straight with the rest of the bike before tightening the axle bolts.
  4. Once the back wheel is straight, tighten up the axle bolts and test your cruiser by pedaling.

It is a good idea to check the slack on your chain every so often and adjust accordingly using the steps mentioned above. This will help prevent your chain from falling off in the future.

Why is my bike chain slipping?

There are a few reasons why your bike chain could be slipping. Your chain may be victim to one of the reasons listed below:

  • Your chain is stretched. This will increase the overall length and tightness around the rear wheel cog potentially causing it to slip. This happens the more frequently you ride over a long period of time.
  • Your rear wheel is misaligned. If your back wheel is tilting to one side this could cause your chain to fail or become derailed.
  • Your rear wheel is positioned too close to the chainring. If this is the case, your chain will not remain tight and thus slip off.
  • There could be dirt or grime in your chain that will cause it to slip or fail. Dirt can disrupt the normal functioning of the chain.

These are a few items to be mindful of when detecting the reason for why your chain slipped. This will help you understand what is wrong with your cruiser so you can quickly resolve the issue.
