Beach Cruiser Buyer’s Guide For Beginners

Is it your first time buying a beach cruiser? With so many brands, models, and sizes it can get overwhelming trying to decide which one to get so I created this helpful guide.

What Is A Cruiser?

First of all, what is a beach cruiser? These types of bikes typically feature thick tires, a wide bike seat, coaster brakes, a non-traditional frame, and long curved handlebars. You have probably seen these being ridden on the beach.

They are very different from other types of bikes.  They are much slower and encourage a more upright sitting posture.  They are very durable and an excellent source of commuting around town.  It has a minimalist design that lacks any type of shifter or suspension forks.

Why Should You Buy A Cruiser?

Buying a cruiser is a no-brainer if you plan on riding the beach or just cruising around town.  They are the perfect bike for running errands.  These types of bikes are super comfortable if you just want to chill out and feel the breeze run through your hair.

I do not recommend riding this bike if you plan on traveling long distances.  These types of bicycles are not built for distance, hills, or speed.

A cruiser is a casual bike that is meant for you to enjoy the surrounding environment.  You should be in no rush when you hop on this seat.  They are very easy to operate so they are perfect for beginners.  If you want to ride in style and be comfortable, then this is the bike for you.

Where To Buy A Cruiser

You can find many beach cruisers and accessories available online.  You will see results offered from many different brands along with a variety of sizes and features. I recommend searching Amazon or Craigslist if you want to find a used beach cruiser.

Benefits of Owning A Cruiser

There are many advantages to owning a beach cruiser. In fact, these types of bikes are very practical to own.

  • You can ride it every day so it will come in handy when you need it the most.
  • You don’t have to worry about altering your clothes before jumping on a cruiser as opposed to a mountain bike where you would find yourself tucking your pant legs into your shoes or socks.
  • From an ergonomic standpoint, the beach cruiser allows you to sit upright instead of hunched over.  The handlebars are easy to hold and turn. Your whole body actually feels more relaxed when riding.
  • Beach cruisers are very convenient for riding around town making errands.  You can easily add a basket to the front to carry any merchandise or groceries while riding.  These types of bikes encourage a more casual ride so you will be less likely to build up a sweat.
  • Cruisers require less maintenance overall. The steel frame makes them more durable. Typically cruisers feature internal hubs to keep them functioning properly.
  • Beach cruisers are also aesthetically pleasing.  They definitely catch people’s eyes.  You will look at peace while riding. So yes, it drastically increases your social status!

Drawbacks of Owning A Cruiser

There are a few disadvantages to riding a beach cruiser. I have listed a few below to be aware of.

  • If you have to be somewhere in a hurry this is not the bike to own.  It is very difficult to reach high speeds on a cruiser.  It will take you longer to reach your destination compared to riding a traditional road bike.
  • There are no handbrakes on single speed beach cruisers. Instead, you need to pedal slightly backward to stop. For those of you that are familiar with using hand brakes, this might take some time getting used to.
  • The handlebars are curved. WhenIi first started riding cruisers, I found these handlebars a little difficult to maneuver.  Turning left and right felt different than using a straight handlebar.  However, you can quickly learn.
  • Some of these bikes do not have multiple gears.  So if you are going up a steep hill, there may be no downshifting capability to make pedaling easier.

How To Choose The Cruiser That Fits You

Cruiser bikes are not made in the traditional sizes like mountain bikes or racing bikes. However, this does not mean one size fits all.  Therefore you need to make sure the beach cruiser you purchase fits you and your needs. This is why you should choose your beach cruiser carefully.

Different cruisers are designed for different types of riders.  If you will be using your bike every day, then you want to make sure you buy a cruiser that is built for durability.

If you don’t plan on using it often, then you don’t have to worry about that feature. You need to fully understand your riding needs instead of simply buying the one that looks the best.

Choosing the best beach cruiser can be a difficult task.  There are so many different options that it can be overwhelming, especially if you are a beginner.

I was once a beginner trying to figure out which one was the best one for me.  I have compiled all of my research and recommendations in this post. I will cover different types of beach cruisers along with the features and designs you should be aware of while searching.

Consider Your Budget

One of the first things to consider when buying a cruiser is your budget.  By setting a max price will eliminate some options immediately, making your decision less stressful.

The average quality beach cruiser usually costs around $200.  For that price, you can get a decent cruiser that should last a while.  Anything above that price tag is considered more luxurious and definitely worth every penny.

Types of Cruisers

Before I bought a cruiser, I thought there was only one standard type.  I didn’t realize there were so many different styles to choose from.

To keep things somewhat simple, I have listed the common types of cruisers below. This will help keep your organized and less confused.

Classic Cruiser

The classic beach cruiser is by far the most popular and most frequently bought.  It is a simple steel-framed design with 26-inch tires and curved handlebars.  You can find them in a variety of different colors.  These are usually the bikes you see people riding on the beach.

Stretch Cruiser

The main difference between the classic cruiser and the stretch cruiser is the frame.  It is much longer and encourages a more relaxed posture due to the pedals being located towards the front of the bike.

Lowrider Cruisers

Lowrider cruisers were definitely built for style and show. This type of bike cruiser has a flashy design and rides much lower to the ground.

The seats are generally more reclined and emphasize leisure and comfort above anything else. You will typically notice some sort of customization done to the design.

Chopper Cruisers

Have you seen a chopper motorcycle? This beach cruiser is designed to resemble that. You will probably find that most of these have ape handlebars, different sized front and back tires, longer forks, and many customized additions to the frame.

Multi-Speed Cruisers

Multi-speed cruiser bikes consist of more than one speed.  Typically, you will either find these types of bike cruisers to have 3 gears or 7 gears. So if you want the versatility to go faster or slower as needed, look for a cruiser that has a multi-speed capability.

Tandem Beach Cruiser

Do you have a partner that also enjoys riding? You should get a beach cruiser for two!  This type of bike is designed with a tandem seat for double the fun.

Electric Beach Cruisers

Are you too lazy to pedal? All you need is a motorized beach cruiser to get you where you want to go. Implementing a motor will make your beach cruiser faster. If you have a need for speed, this is the type of cruiser you want.

Men’s vs Women’s Cruisers

In case you were wondering, yes, there is a slight difference between men’s and women’s beach cruisers.  The men’s cruiser is designed with the top frame bar extending directly across from the steering wheel to the top of the seat bar.

For the women’s cruiser, you will notice that the top frame bar actually dips down to the lower part of the seat bar from the steering wheel.  This design gives the women’s style a lower mounting height because women are generally smaller than men.

Whether or not it is designed for a man or woman, there are a few other things to consider when shopping for your beach cruiser. Keep reading to review some of the standard design features.  These are some components to keep in mind when searching for your ideal bike.

Standard Beach Cruiser Design Features

Since beach cruisers are not your traditional bike, you will want to consider the following design features listed below.  This will act as a good checklist when you are researching the cruiser you want to buy.

Size

What size beach cruiser is best for you? Generally, cruisers are designed with 26-inch or 24-inch wheels.

For those of you that stand between 4 and 5 feet tall, the 24-inch diameter wheel bike will be perfect for you.  Those that stand between 5 and 6 feet tall should buy the 26-inch diameter wheel bike. If you are taller than 6 feet, you should get the 26-inch diameter wheel with an extra large frame.

Size is one of the most important factors when buying a bicycle. If the size is wrong, then this will make riding uncomfortable and difficult.

To help, I have created this cruiser bike size chart. It covers beach cruisers for kids and beach cruisers for adults. Please note that the sizing is just an estimate.

Age Height Wheel Size Frame Size
Under 5 Under 4’ 16” Up to 10”
5 – 10 3.5’ – 4.5’ 20” 12”
10 – Adult 4’ – 5’ 24” 15”
14 and Over 5’ – 6.25’ 26” 16” – 21”
14 and Over > 6’ 26” XL

Cruiser bikes are a little more challenging when it comes to precise fit, unlike mountain or road bikes. Most manufacturers usually list ideal heights and ages.

The table displayed above should give you a good idea in terms of the correct size to purchase for cruisers. Although not exact, this chart is a good place to start.

You will be able to adjust the handlebars and seat accordingly for best fit. For more information, read my post on how to size your beach cruiser for the perfect fit.

Cruiser Weight

If you plan on lifting, storing, carrying, and moving this bike a lot, you may want to consider purchasing a lightweight cruiser.  The lighter cruisers are made of aluminum.

If you’re not going to be lifting or moving this bike, then get a steel frame. Overall, I recommend an aluminum because not only are they lighter but they are very resistant to rust.

Maintenance

Do some research on the cruiser you want in terms of how often it needs to be fixed and what type of upkeep it needs.  Obviously, single speed bikes need less maintenance compared to multi-speed cruisers.

If you buy a cruiser with multiple gears, don’t be surprised if you need to fix something in the near future. I posted many DIY articles on how to maintain your beach cruiser. Part of maintaining your bike is knowing how to replace your cruiser chain because more than like your chain will become disengaged at some point.

Safety

How safe is your cruiser? You want to make sure it is made of durable material and has multiple customer reviews. You also want to make sure it is easy to assemble.  The last thing you need is for your wheel to fall off while you are riding!

Maneuverability

How easy is your cruiser to steer? Read some customer reviews and determine how easy it is to operate.

Is there difficulty turning? Does the cruiser allow you to drive around obstacles easily? Most cruisers are fairly easy to maneuver but this is something to keep in the back of your mind. This feature impacts your overall safety too while riding.

Color

Beach cruisers come in many different colors so choose one that best fits your personality!  Some stores and online platforms may be out of stock of certain colors. Make sure to check before purchasing.

Accessories

For some cruiser designs, a few extra accessories are added. Accessories that are nice to have are a front basket for transporting groceries, reflectors, cup holders, luggage rack, kickstand, chain casing, lights, and front or rear fenders.  There are many beach cruiser accessories you can buy online as well in case the bike you get does not have any.

Frame

The frames of cruisers are usually made of either aluminum or steel.  This material ensures that your bike will be very durable and increase longevity.

If you had to choose between a steel frame or aluminum, go with the aluminum. Aluminum is lighter, more durable, and does not rust like steel. Regarding frame size make sure to reference my cruiser frame size table to help you pick the right fit.

Tires

For the wheels, I’d recommend getting these 2″ rubber tires.  Make sure the tread is good and does not wear easily.  Trust me, you do not want to be replacing tires often.

Handlebars

The curved handlebars are a signature feature of the beach cruiser.  They encourage a more upright posture, which places less stress on your back.  You feel more relaxed riding this way.  You can also customize your handlebars. Some like to use ape-hang handlebars.

Pedals

The pedals should be durable and have some tread and padding. The pedals that come with your beach cruiser should suffice and remain usable for years to come.  However, you can customize by searching for cruiser pedals online.

Gears

Depending on your riding needs, you may want your bike to have gears. If you feel the need for speed, plan on climbing hills, and like using hand brakes then purchase a cruiser with multiple speeds.

You can get configurations that go up to 7 gears. Keep in mind that multi-gear cruisers will more than likely need more maintenance.  If you want to keep it simple, minimal, and just cruise at a leisurely pace, then go for a single speed cruiser.

Wheels

The diameter of your wheel will vary depending on your size so make sure to refer to the size chart mentioned previously. Typically for an adult, you will be buying a 26” rim.

You can learn which size wheels are right for you by reviewing the cruiser sizing chart on this site. Note that large wheel diameters are better for overcoming surface roughness.  The most common wheels for cruisers are made of alloy rims and have 32 spokes.

Brakes

The brakes on a single speed cruiser will require you to pedal backward.  Remember when you use to do this as a kid?  They are called coaster brakes.

Using this backpedal braking system reduces wear on the rims and remains efficient in rainy weather. The only downsides to coaster brakes are if the chain drops or malfunctions due to excessive load.

If you purchase a cruiser with multiple speeds, you will be using a handbrake instead. An advantage of rim brakes is lower rim heat, which reduces stress on the wheels.

Unfortunately, this type of braking system does not perform well in bad weather. Also, you may need to replace the brake pads if you ride frequently.

Bike Seat

One of the main ideas of the cruiser is to ride in comfort. Therefore your saddle needs to be comfortable. It’s also important for your posture.  Check reviews regarding the comfort and ergonomics of your cruiser seat.

Aerodynamics

A cruiser with good aerodynamics makes it ultimately easier to pedal and ride.  It improves the overall comfort as well.

Comfort

The whole point of the cruiser is to ride comfortably.  Check out the reviews on the bikes you intend to buy.  I provide some recommendations and reviews at the end of this guide to help.  If you’re not comfortable, there is no point in having the bike. You want to make sure everything feels good from the seat to the pedals to the handlebars.

Style

Choose the style that fits you best.  I covered a few the most common types of cruisers that you can choose from.  The stretch is super comfortable while the low rider is very stylish.  You can’t go wrong with the classic cruiser. Make sure the bike you pick embodies the “wow” factor.
