Best Beach Cruiser Handlebars

Need to replace your current handlebars? If you are not skilled enough to ride your cruiser without using handlebars, then you definitely need them to steer your bike. I created this guide to help you choose the right one.

What type of handlebars should you use?

What type of handlebars should you use for your beach cruiser? The type of handlebar you purchase for your bike will definitely impact your riding experience and body posture.

Therefore it is important to spend some time learning about the different types and best ones you can buy. Here are the 3 most popular types of beach cruiser handlebars.

High-rise handlebars

These types of handlebars are also known as “ape hangers” or upright handlebars. The tall U-shape structure can accommodate a basket. This design provides the classic cruiser image and will certainly get attention.

Upright handlebars are very popular for beach cruisers, especially low-riders. They allow you to comfortably sit upright while pedaling.

The downside? Your pedaling power will be reduced because of the resulting upright body position. Also, more pressure will be placed on your bum so make sure you have a comfy seat if you plan on taking long rides.

high rise handlebars

If you like this type of handlebar style and want to replace your old ones, I found these cheap high-rise handlebars on Amazon. Not only do they look cool but will make your ride more comfortable.

Mid-rise handlebars

Most beach cruisers are originally manufactured with mid-rise handlebars. You will find that they come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. The handlebar heights will vary as well.

My friend purchased this Sunlite Alloy Retro handlebar to replace his broken handlebars and it looks amazing. The ride is more comfortable, there is less stress on his wrists, and steering is easy. You do need to be more aware of your surroundings when riding because these handlebars are wider.

Low-rise handlebars

There are also handlebars that are designed to be lower than the average height. Low-rise handlebars will naturally position your body in a more forward leaning position. This will cause your hips to anteriorly rotate activating the core for a more powerful leg drive when pedaling.

You may also feel more stable when riding and less pressure on your buttocks. This position can also help to relieve lower back pain. I found a good deal for these low-rise cruiser bike handlebars on Amazon and wanted to share with you.

Low-Rise Cruiser Bike Handlebar

They look nice on a cruiser and are super light. However, the handles are not parallel to each other. They slightly angle out, which makes them slightly wider than I originally thought. So if you have wide thighs you will not have to worry about them getting in the way while pedaling.

Features to consider

There are a few features to consider when buying your beach cruiser handlebar. I already discussed some of these.

Riding Comfort

Every individual has their own favorite riding position. Some people feel more comfortable leaning forward while others prefer to sit upright. It is important to purchase handlebars that accommodate your riding style preference.

  • High-rise handlebars will allow your posture to rest upright on your seat.
  • Mid-rise handlebars enable you to find comfort either sitting upright or with a slight forward lean.
  • Dropped handlebars give you the option of many different riding angles, especially if you prefer to lean forward placing more weight into your hands.

Each handlebar creates a riding position that relieves pressure in some places but also increases pressure in others. Depending on your current physical health, one handlebar will feel more comfortable compared to the others.

If you have wrist and elbow issues, I recommend staying away from the low-rise handlebar. Any handlebar that is dropped lower than the stem will increase pressure on your wrists and elbows.

If you have lower back problems, then sitting upright may feel uncomfortable and cause more pain. So you might want to stay away from using the upright handlebars.

Plus, sitting in an upright position compresses your back and can place stress on the sciatic nerve. Therefore, using mid-rise or low-rise handlebars will reduce the amount of weight directed toward your back by transferring it to your hands.

Handlebar Leverage

Leverage for handlebars refers to how easily you can turn. You would think the wider the handlebars the more easily it would be to turn. It is actually the opposite!

I personally found it difficult to turn my cruiser using wide handlebars. Placing your arms further out away from your body actually decreases the amount of leverage.

How wide should your handlebars be? A good rule of thumb is to have your handlebars be no more and no less than shoulder width. Knowing the measurements of your chest span can help you purchase the right size handlebars.

Unfortunately for some handlebars, you don’t have an option regarding the size. If you purchase chrome or aluminum handlebars, you saw off ends if they are too wide or simply take a more narrow grip.

Cruiser Handlebar Material

The majority of handlebars manufactured today use either aluminum or chrome. This helps to make your beach cruiser more durable and lightweight. So when purchasing handlebars, make sure to check the material.

Steel is still used but can be heavy. Carbon handlebars are the best because they are the lightest and typically strongest.

Why you need handlebars

Most of us take handlebars for granted even though it is a part of the bike that we come in contact with the most. When you stop and think about it, handlebars on a bike are important for a few different reasons:

  • Maneuvering and steering
  • Pedaling leverage
  • Allows for posture adjustment
  • Storage of groceries, personal items, and accessories via a basket
  • Impact absorption

As you can see, handlebars play an important role when riding your cruiser. The type you get can impact your ride, your health, and also the lifespan of your bike. Make sure to reference this guide to help you find the best one that fits your riding style.
